On Wednesday night, our newly created basketball team downed Elitzur Tel Aviv 87-68 in our first official match in Israel’s Liga Bet. AJ Mitnick and his coaching staff were missing a few members from the roster but still had a strong group of players to choose from for our maiden game.
After a slow start, we eventually beat our opponents, thanks to the combined scoring of both Barak Swarttz and Ryan Clamage, along with Nate Leroy’s tight defense to make up for the slow start, in the eventual 19-point win.
We traded baskets with Elitzur the entire first half, with each team refusing to take their foot off the gas pedal as our opponents took a slim halftime lead on a last-second backcourt steal and layup in the final possession of the second quarter.
Following more back and forth play after the break, we began to blow the game open with a number of deflections leading to easy fast-break scoring opportunities. Barak Swarttz, who led Inter in scoring was a handful for Eliitzur and was fouled nearly every time he got into the paint.
With 6 minutes to go in the 4th quarter and Inter up by only single digits, coach AJ Mitnick lit his squad up during a timeout making sure they knew it was time to close out the game. The team responded with a valiant effort and cruised to the 19-point victory.
Everyone involved made contributions to this historic win, but notable mentions to our starting point guard Oren Ben-Brith, who helped steer us to victory facilitating the offense all night, and Yona Kadosh, who had two big 3 pointers off the bench.
